Behind the Body | Health, Fitness & Lifestyle for Women 40+

At 38, I stood in a dressing room trying on the same size jeans I'd worn for years. They didn't fit. I hadn't changed anything but my body was different and I couldn't figure out why. If that feeling sounds familiar, you're in the right place. I lost 20 pounds and spent the next 10 years learning how to keep it off in real life, with a full schedule, stress, and all the hormonal changes that come with your 40s and 50s. That experience led me to become a double-certified Nutrition and Fitness Coach and build Behind the Body, a coaching and education platform for women in their 40s and 50s who are done losing the same weight over and over. The newsletter is where we start. Most coaches show you the first 90 days. Behind the Body is about the next 10 years. Subscribe below and join our community.

Hey Reader! You know those fitness coaches you see online? The ones with toned arms and abs? I used to think they all achieved that look naturally. Some do, but many get a lot of help. Realizing this changed how I saw my own body. That’s just one of the ten things I cover in this week’s episode, and it’s available now. 🎧 New episode: 10 Things Making You Look Worse After 40 Here’s what we’re talking about: The calorie number I always trust Why cutting carbs didn’t work out like I thought it...

BEHIND THE BODY Diet • Fitness • Lifestyle for Women 40+ I haven’t been able to get my Oura ring off my index finger for a week. The ring isn't too small. It actually fits perfectly. I'm just really puffy and swollen right now, so it won’t budge. And I find it pretty funny. So here’s what’s going on. I started HRT a few weeks back, so I knew some water retention might happen. Plus, it’s been really hot in San Diego, and we’ve been playing a lot more golf. Somewhere along the way, I started...

I haven't been feeling great lately, and my Oura Ring showed clear signs of strain yesterday. It picked up on the stress my body was under, which matched how I was feeling. Still, I felt well enough to go to the gym, and I try not to skip Mondays. By my fourth set of hip thrusts, I sat there getting ready to lift 410 pounds, trying to motivate myself. Really, I was looking for reasons not to do it. It's okay if I don't do this fourth set. It's okay if I only do a few. It's okay to not go as...

Hey Reader! I want to be skinny. I want to look hot. I want to look like Charlize Theron. I’ve said these things before, and I bet you have too. It’s easy to say you want to be skinny. It took me a long time to realize that wanting it and actually being that person are two different things. This week’s episode is all about the difference between wanting to be skinny and actually living it. It’s out now. 🎧 New Episode: Weight Loss: Wanting to Be Skinny Isn’t Enough Here’s what we’re talking...

BEHIND THE BODY Diet • Fitness • Lifestyle for Women 40+ Six years ago this month, I decided to try going vegan for 30 days. It was a random goal, kind of like my own version of a sober October, and it was mostly about my appearance. I wanted to see if I could lose a few pounds by cutting out animal products. I've set a lot of goals like that over the years. Usually, I'd feel motivated for about a week or two and then lose momentum. But this time was different. During those 30 days, I watched...

BEHIND THE BODY Diet • Fitness • Lifestyle for Women 40+ I spent 17 years working for a corporation, so I’m very familiar with the Sunday scaries. When Sunday night comes, you start dreading a week full of office time, conference calls, endless meetings, project deadlines, and maybe work that doesn’t really excite you. Since I started working for myself, I haven’t felt that way. I really enjoy the work I do for Behind the Body and the responsibilities that come with it. And honestly, if I...

Hey Reader! When I hit perimenopause, I suddenly started taking 7,000 fewer steps each day. I was still going to the gym and eating the same way, but my weight kept creeping up. I figured my hormones were to blame. In this week’s episode, I share the full story: how I lost those steps, how it affected my weight, and why I didn’t realize it was happening. 🎧 New Episode: Perimenopause Weight Gain: The 7,000 Steps a Day I Lost What we’re chatting about: → How I lost 7,000 steps a day even though...

BEHIND THE BODY Diet • Fitness • Lifestyle for Women 40+ Over the past six months, I put on 5 to 8 pounds and just couldn’t lose it. I had no idea why I was gaining weight. Suddenly, my shorts felt tighter, and I felt puffier, even though nothing else seemed different. It’s so easy to think at this age, “It’s just my hormones, it’s perimenopause, I’m getting older, this is it.” But that didn’t seem right. My diet was good, I was hitting the gym five days a week, and I was exercising like...

Hey Reader! You can eat whatever you want, drink alcohol, and still lose weight. I don't mean a cheat meal on Saturday. I mean pizza, fries, and wine while the weight comes off. If you've put off losing weight because you're not ready to give up the food you love, this episode is how you can keep it all in rotation. The new episode is live. 🎧 New Episode: Eat Whatever You Want, Drink Wine, and Still Lose Weight What we're chatting about: The only rule for losing weight, and the 3 ways to...

BEHIND THE BODY Diet • Fitness • Lifestyle for Women 40+ Yesterday I woke up puffy and bloated, with my stomach so distended it felt like a wreck. We spent our anniversary weekend away, Thursday through Sunday, and I ate and drank more than I normally do. A lot more, honestly. 😬 The first thing I thought when I got up was: I went overboard. I set myself back. I feel like crap, I have no energy, and my body is telling me I've gained 10 pounds. Ugh. If you've ever eaten and drunk more than...
